What is USMLE?
USMLE or the United States Medical Licensing Examination is a three-tier examination for obtaining a license to practice medicine in the United States.
USMLE It is co-sponsored by two main entities: FSMB, the Federation of State Medical Boards, and NBME, the National Board of Medical Examiners. The USMLE is governed by a committee – members of FSMB, ECFMG, NBME, and the public. The committee is highly held responsible for the entire USMLE program to identify and approve the procedures for scoring and determining the result standards along with all the substantial policies and procedures.
Steps in USMLE
- Step 1
- Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS), Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK)
- Step 3
In STEPS 1, 2 CK, AND 2 CS – A candidate should have officially enrolled, or should have graduated in a medical school besides Canada and the US as listed earlier in the World Directory of Medical Schools meeting the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements;
Information on ECFMG criteria:
- A candidate must meet all the requirements while filling in the details on the application, and on the test day.
- In case, if a candidate dismisses or withdraws from the medical school, the candidate will not be eligible to attend the USMLE.
For STEP 3
A candidate should possess MD degree, or an equivalent in a medical school besides Canada and the US as listed earlier in the World Directory of Medical Schools meeting the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements;
The candidate must also meet the below requirements:
- Clear the three main steps namely, Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS
- Possess a qualified ECFMG Certification
He/ She should meet all the eligibility requirements as mentioned prior in submitting an application and on test day.
Documents required to apply for the test:
- National Identity Card
- Driver’s license with photograph
- Other forms of government-issued identification
The ID provided must be presented with:
- Name as it appears on the scheduling permit
- Candidate’s photograph
- Candidate’s signature
Guidelines to prepare for USMLE exam
1. Increase level of involvement
USMLE is not alike other medical exams. It is not conducted to evaluate you by focussing on problem-solving, (i.e.) what to do with what you know. So, it is essential to have a keen involvement in learning as it can aid you to perform tasks.
2. Follow a structure of pyramid
Firstly, recognise the topics you are familiar with, and then memorise to recall the content. Secondly, solve the problems by revising the content and apply the same to find solutions for the problems to present situations. Eventually, innovate new responses with your wisdom and understanding.
3. Interact with peers
The quickest way to boost your mastery beyond recalling is to make use of the materials you have referred to. Interacting with the professionals assist you better to gather idea to master clinical reasoning.
4. Analyze circumstances
Especially during lectures, understand and grasp the concepts clearly and tell yourself why each fact is relevant and on what circumstances it can be valued. If you feel you can’t answer the question, you can conclude that your content is likely too difficult to matter for USMLE.
5. Focus on questions
