The National Exit Test (NExT) is an upcoming examination in India designed to serve multiple purposes: it will act as a licensure exam for MBBS graduates, a gateway for postgraduate (PG) medical admissions, and a screening test for foreign medical graduates. Slated to replace the NEET PG and FMGE exams, NExT aims to standardize the evaluation process for medical professionals across the country.

🧪 Structure of NExT

NExT is divided into two parts:

  • NExT Step 1: A theoretical examination featuring multiple-choice questions (MCQs) covering six subjects:

    • Medicine and allied subjects
    • Pediatrics
    • Surgery and allied subjects
    • Otorhinolaryngology
    • Obstetrics & Gynecology
    • Ophthalmology

This exam is typically taken after the final year of the MBBS program.

  • NExT Step 2: A practical/clinical and viva voce examination conducted in person by respective state health universities or institutions. This step assesses clinical skills, decision-making, and communication abilities and is usually taken after completing a one-year internship.

📌 Eligibility Criteria for NExT

To be eligible for NExT, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • MBBS Degree: Possess an MBBS degree from a medical college approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
  • Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs): FMGs seeking licensure to practice in India must clear NExT to obtain registration.
  • Internship Completion: Candidates must complete a 12-month compulsory rotating internship to be eligible for NExT Step 2.
  • Number of Attempts: There is no restriction on the number of attempts for NExT; however, candidates must pass NExT Step 1 within 10 years of joining the MBBS program.

🎯 Importance of NExT

NExT is poised to streamline the medical education system by:

  • Licensure: Serving as a mandatory licensure exam for practicing medicine in India.
  • PG Admissions: Acting as a unified entrance test for admission to postgraduate medical courses, replacing NEET PG.
  • Standardization: Ensuring a uniform assessment standard for all medical graduates, including foreign medical graduates.
